Challenge/Solution
The Lemmen-Holton Cancer Center is the newest facility for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 245,000 square foot outpatient tower consolidates many services which now can be had under one roof.

With such a vulnerable patient population, it was important to Spectrum Health to provide an environment that would be life affirming. The six-story tower atrium is surrounded by lush gardens on each floor and is a vertical metaphor for the earth, from the water to the sky.

The artwork is themed on each floor to compliment the architectural narrative of the building. The subject matter for the art is based on Michigan themes-the lake, the farms, the gardens, the city of Grand Rapids. A number of well-known local artists were commissioned to execute the major works for the building. There are more than 250 works of art in various original media located throughout all patient and staff areas of the building.

As the home of world-famous Meijer Sculpture Gardens, sculpture plays a significant role in the local arts scene. Each floor of the facility has commissioned bronzes of native birds of Michigan. The sculptures are located appropriately on floors that represent the level at which the birds live.

This project was a collaboration of the design team, the hospital, its physicians and patient representatives.
