Challenge/Solution
Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend is the newest hospital in the PeaceHealth System. The new facility is a 1,000,000 square foot, 386-bed acute care hospital and also the home of the Oregon Heart and Vascular Institute.

As a Pebble Project, Sacred Heart was vitally interested in creating an evidence-based art program that would be based on the imagery of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Through a master plan process, AAR worked with the owner to create standards and criteria that would accommodate future art programs throughout the PeaceHealth Oregon Region.

Mt. Hood's Timberline Lodge, a WPA project from the 1930's noted for both its art and architecture, was the architectural inspiration for the project. There are four monumental site specific works that are incorporated into the architecture, including over 600 feet of custom stair rails, a massive carved glass window in the chapel, and two 10'x16' limestone bas reliefs on the exterior clock tower.

Paintings, pastels and photographs from artists working through the Pacific Northwest fill the walls of the public waiting and corridor areas throughout the building, with more than 500 original pieces throughout the building.

The original work in the public spaces on the first three floors honors the feeling of artwork typically seen in period Arts and Crafts interiors. This is particularly true of the 4'x16' iconic Oregon landscape painting in the main lobby. The dining room, which is the most heavily embellished Arts and Crafts space, has black and white photography reminiscent of that period of time.

This Vista Award winning project completed in July 2008 was the result of extensive collaboration amongst the owner, the architects, the art committee and the local artistic community, the Family Council and the SacredHeart Foundation.
