The Impact of Inpatient Room Renovation with Color, Art, and Furnishings
An extensive renovation of the inpatient units at Houston’s oldest hospital was conducted in early 2011. Feedback on room color, visual art in the rooms and corridors, and overall décor was compared pre and post renovation through a customized survey. Correlations between responses to questions on the physical environment and responses to the questions on quality of care were analyzed. This study was seeking to understand if, and how, purely visual, seemingly “non-essential” elements of a physical space contribute to the healthcare experience of patients and staff.
