Visual Image Research to Develop Evidence-based Art Programs

Post Occupancy Evaluation of an Evidence Based Art Program
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston

In 2002, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, one of the leading hospitals in the world in cancer treatment, decided to undertake an evidence-based approach to the artwork in their new Ambulatory Care Building (ACB), and hired American Art Resources towards this objective. Visual art was installed in this building in accordance with the existing evidence on healing art. Criteria for art selection were developed and different criteria were used in different clinics.

In 2007 we conducted a Post-Occupancy Evaluation of the artwork. On-site surveys were conducted with patients and visitors (total 210), and online surveys were conducted with the staff members (total 240). Findings that were statistically significant showed that the artwork made both patients and staff feel better by serving as a positive distraction for patients and a de-stressor for staff, helped to de-institutionalize the "hospital" image and enhance the overall image of the hospital as a healing environment, and, served to develop a favorable "branding" for the hospital.
