BEYOND THE FRAME
Pop Art in the Age of AI
Many remember the Pop Art movement of the late 1950s as an echo of the rise in automation and mass communication that cultivated our modern era. Today, it is easy to draw parallels between the 1950s moment and the AI boom, as Glasstire’s John Ewing does. Ewing calls attention to the precipice of change we as a society stand on, examining the works of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Edward Ruscha as mirrors of the modern moment in the Pop on Paperexhibition at the Tyler Museum of Art. These artists created in response to the technological changes they saw in their daily lives. Today, as artists grapple with the ethics of AI, pop art becomes a curious precursor and historical informant, helping us tackle the question: will AI be widely adopted as a new artistic medium, like acrylic paint, clay, or printing?
