Duke Health
Bed Tower Addition
Location: Durham, NC
Architect: Perkins + Will
The new 11-floor, 350 beds tower, served as the new home for Duke Children’s Hospital, as well as a shared public space for adult patients. The owner’s vision to spotlight local arts was pivotal, focusing on artists from North Carolina to enrich the hospital environment. Collaborating with key stakeholders, we developed a comprehensive plan that encompassed local art image standards, a strategic hierarchy for art placement, and consistent framing standards. The collection features a diverse array of artworks that adorn both public and patient spaces, creating a cohesive and visually engaging environment. The imagery reflects the natural beauty of North Carolina, representing its three distinct landforms: The Coastal Plains, the Piedmonts, and the Appalachian Mountains. This regional focus not only celebrates local artistry but also brings a sense of place and familiarity to patients and visitors.
